The Indigenous community traditionally honors its Two-Spirit people, a term associated with Indigenous people possessing both male and female spirits. One area is competitive powwows, which are often armed with strict rules and regulations. The dances you perform are still largely based on sex (jingle dress dancing, for instance, is a women’s dance). However, that’s not to say change isn’t afoot. Special Two-Spirit powwows are on the rise, where dancers can dance any style they choose despite their gender. Some powwows are even rewriting their rules to accommodate Two-Spirit dancers as well. And now, there’s a new Two-Spirit couple on the powwow scene who is breaking barriers and changing perceptions of what Indigenous dance can be all together.
